In May of 2004, a group of Ward Avenue ladies embarked on a new ministry. Yarn was purchased, and needles began flying. The Prayer Shawl Ministry was born.
Each shawl is brought before the congregation, annointed, and prayed over by the entire congregation. The shawls are presented, in person or by mail, to men, women, children, and infants who are seriously ill, facing a very trying situation, or in mourning.
Each shawl has an enclosed card which explains the ministry and purpose of the shawl.
As of January 2012, almost 100 shawls have been presented. Shawls delivered locally are usually hand-carried by a couple of members of the ministry who have prayer with the recipient during a short visit. On occasion prayer shawls have also been shipped all over the world. Based on calls, cards and letters received, this ministry has been a great blessing to the recipients. However, members of the PSM feel it has been a far greater blessing to them.
