Church History
Original Church Structure on Ward Ave.
The Ward Avenue Church of God of Prophecy has a very rich history.  In the summer of 1927, Bishop C.L. Taylor and others conducted a wonderful revival.  That small group came together on November 6th to establish a local Church of God. Cottage prayer meetings in different homes had preceded the formal action.  This year of 2006 will mark 79 years since this local church was founded.
As written by former pastor Phillip Smith, Whether formal written histories or the oral traditions of the Hebrews and African tribes, the telling of a people's history continues from generation to generation.  These histories of civilizations, nations, tribes, cities, families, and individuals are important to their continued existence.   That is no less true of local churches.  We learn so much from the history of a local church.  It is not just the facts that are significant (who held what position of leadership when), but historical documents which provide so much more.  When we review the history, we capture a sense of vision that drove the founders of the church.

Our local church has a wonderful historical document compiled at the time of our 75th Anniversary celebration, by Betty Whitten.  Several copies are kept locally in the church for anyone who is interested in learning more about the rich history of the Ward Avenue, High Point church.

1993 - New building added
Family Life Center

On January 24, 1993, the congregation dedicated a separate building housing the Family Life Center (pictured above).  This building includes a gymnasium, large kitchen, and a large meeting room.  This building has proven to be a major asset to the local ministry, hosting a variety of youth activities, Senior Citizen's meetings, wedding and anniversary receptions, showers, etc.  A number of congregation members have evolved from athletic events held in the FLC, including the current webmaster responsible for designing this website.

Another special feature of the FLC is a small apartment that is used to house visiting ministers.  On occasion, it serves to bring in additional income through rentals during the International Home Furnishings Market held twice a year in High Point.

On January 8, 1995, the church membership voted to accept an offer to purchase the Burton Road parsonage and eight acres of land.  In October 1995, some of the proceeds from the sale of parsonage were used to eliminate the loan on the Family Life Center.
